Filming Schedule - Day 4 - the Meeting

My actors aged between 20-27 all male - the age and gender I am aiming my film at have all made suggesting throughout my filming as to what they would like to see in a film, they often contribute good ideas to improve the trailer so I decided to have a meeting to discuss in detail what they as the target audience would want to get from the film and anything they have seen before they have found particually found stuck out for them in a film they have really liked and also anything original they haven't seen done before they would like to see.

A main thing we all agreed they would like to see in the cinema was a 'parody' like film but not quite as obvious as films such as 'Scary Movie' for example, or 'Disaster Movie', they would prefer the 'mocking' of other films to look unintentional and subtle to achieve the most comedy. Also they said they would like it to be based around afour boys on a camping trip. This I thought would be a good idea as it allows the conventions of a horror parady so introduced the idea into my schedule. As I went through the synopsis of my film it occured that perhaps the camping trip should be the film instead of my previous idea to have the main character getting a good job and girlfriend but at the jeopardy/risk of losing his friends. At the current time I am sticking to my initial plan as we haven't begun filming the camping scenes, which I feel would cause a lot of filming problems including location, lack of light, and equipment.

Filming Schedule - Day 3

Day 3

On day 3 I decided to was vital to get some footage of some value - therefore put aside what I initially planned to film, (a scene we hadn't gone through yet - which therefore would have meant a lot of time planing the shot). We therefore -my cast and me decided to redo a scene we had gone through on day 1. The shot was in the back garden of a relatives house - the reasons I chose this location was because it has the characteristics of a pub. I sat my four actors (the main character and his three main friends) on the table, two on either side, this shot was inspired by Peter Jackson's 'Lord of the Rings the Return of the King' 2003, where four hobbits sit at the pub table, this location I am going to make thier 'usual' meeting place where they share laughter and their problems - making it a recurring place in my film and trailer, I hope this will familiarize the audience with the location and help them understand the 'closeness' of the four friends and how they carry the film.

My schedule for day 3
  • Get shot of them 'toasting' with thier pint glasses from side left angle.
  • Get shot of them 'toasting' from a satalite view (inspred by shot in the trailer for 'The Inbetweeners Movie'.
  • Get shot of them just talking and laughing (the actual talking wont be included in the trailer - I just wanted a shot of them bonding to put as a perhaps 2 second clip in the trailer).
  • I also planned for a shot of the four actors in the car but it was very tricky to get the camera at the right angle which allowed all the actors to be in the shot - we plan to go back to filming that shot another day, as the there was no light outside and the shot proved too dark to use in my trailer.

Filming Schedule - Day 2

Day 2
On day 2 of filming again we ended up doing the majority of it 'trail running' to make sure before we started we caught the scenes at their best angles, speed and light, although I could only manage to get my cast at five o'clock which meant rather poor light outside - so we focused on shots inside. Again this proved difficult to get any 'valuable' footage as a lot of time was spent doing 'trial and error' with the camera and the actors lines.

Filming Schedule - Day 1

Day 1
On day one we initially planned to film but we ended up really just 'trail running' through scenes planned for that day and later days. As we started filming I found I was constantly asking my actors to repeat the lines as I tried the scene in different ways.

We tried out shooting scenes from different angles to see which boasts a more pleasing on the eye when watched. Some angles proved unsuccessful due to a number of different things including low light, too much light, rooms lacking anything particually intruging or didn't seem appropriate for the scene, an actor wearing the same coloured clothing as the background, I found a lot of time went to waiting for the sun to go as it was too light and distored the visual on the camera. But from these problems I learnt the faults of my film-making that I will avoid when making my trailer.

Production companies

Production companies I would want behind me and my film:
Film4 http://www.film4.com/productions

Films Film4 have produced with similarities to mine:

Autumn 2011

Tyrannosour

Kill List

Random

Summer 2011

One Day

The Inbetweeners

Attack the Block

Spring 2011

Submarine

The Eagle

Never let me go

Winter 2011

Neds

127 Hours

Another Year

Caveman Films http://www.cavemanfilms.co.uk/

The reason behind choosing this company is that it is reletavely new in the industry, recently set up by actor Andy Serkis (Gollum). I looked at Caveman Films website and saw that it says 'Caveman Films will produce cutting edge comedy', something my film is heavily based on. It's studios are based in London meaning a perfect location for my film. As far as my research goes they have only produced one film, All Good Children, 2011, but as a developing, British production company, specifying in various genres including comedy, I would be very interested to have them behind my film.

Bwark Productions http://www.bwark.com/

I couldn't find a Bwark website but all of my research on Bwark Productions was heavily linked to The Inbetweeners movie, a movie I am probably most usuing as a template for my film. Using aspects like having four or five boys in their own little group.

I also found this website showing all the production companies used to British comedies.

Inspiring Directors

Run Fatboy Run PosterDavid Schwimmer, for his work on Run, Fatboy, Run, 2007

The reason I chose David Schwimmer as a director with relevance to my film was his light-hearted comedic tone, but still as I want my film's comedy base to be of the expense of the main, male character.but ultimatley sees him through a life journey.

The film overall seems to run at a fast pace, whether its to reflect on the theme of running it also means the comedy is fast paced - much like what I want my film to be like. Hopefully using Schwimmers technique can achieve a lot of comedy in my trailer - appealing to a varied audience but the majority of male.

Arthur PosterSteve Gordon, for his work on Arthur, 1981

Like Schwimmer, the main character is a male of emersed with the comnedy and yet follows him on a journey to self-discovery and gaining a better life-style. Which is want I want to entwine into my film.

The Hangover PosterTodd Phillps for his work on The Hangover, 2009

Like Schimmer again it seems this film is edited to make it seem
very fast paced, again allowing a lot more quick-witted comedy,
usually at the expense of a main characer, something that will
feature a lot in my film.

Ricky Gervais

Gervais' bitter, British, black comedy style is what I would like in my trailer, as a British film I want to weave in as much British comedy as a I can, yet still keeping it heart-warming by using Schwimmers light-hearted tone in Run, Fatboy, Run

Amelie 2001

The opening is conventional because it gives an aspect of what the film will be like; warm-hearted, fun, interesting.

- Montage of images is interesting because it gives a very matter-of-fact affect, which enroles in an interesting appeal.

- From the exposition we learn Amelies charcter to be michevious, warm, comedic, beautiful, yet she has an awful upbringing

- Non-digestic sound creates an atmosphere of unrealistic, magical, mystical, speed and excitment. The narrartor is also very matter-of-fact, comedic and fast paced (in french).

- I agree subtitles devalue the quality of enjoyment of film for non-french speaking audiences as you miss out on the colourful picture, but the french does give it a more romantic and exquisit feel.

- I think the opening is overall very affective - storyline created makes you want to watch on to see what she is like, because through the opening we never see Amelie speak.

Shots I would consider using in the trailer:

- See her older for the first time ( Amelie turns to camera, inquisitive look)
- Shot were Amelie holds up spoon (looks to camera)
- Shot were Amelie is on roof (Can see the back of Amelie, view of France)
- Ball hitting brick- then Amelie looks through the hole
